Black people are:

2x as likely to die in police custody
37x more likely to be stopped and search due to negative perceptions
3x more likely to be arrested
44x more likely to be detained under the mental act
3x more likely to be unemployed
2

Psychotic Disorder:

A significantly higher percentage of black men experienced a psychotic disorder in the past year than white men. Black people are four times more likely to be detained under the Mental Health Act than White people
3
As a result of racist experiences and cultural differences, many black communities have lost trust in as highlighted in numerous reports, particularly the 2002 report "Breaking the Circles of Fear."
4
Because of the stigma associated with mental health problems, it is difficult to discuss problems and seek early help for fear of being diagnosed. Inequality and discrimination against black communities can put people at risk of developing psychosis.
5
Black representation is lacking in NHS decision-making as well as among mental health service employees. The deeply embedded prejudice and stigma against the Mad, Bad, Dangerous, and Black poses a massive challenge to the black community involved in the mental health system.
6
There is a lack of capacity in communities to provide mental health interventions.  The majority of health spending is allocated to acute rather than preventative services.

It is difficult to address the root causes of poor mental health, such as deprivation and social exclusion, which are disproportionately prevalent in poorer and black communities.

About Us

“MenTalk Ubuntu’s approach to change is to focus our energy and resources not on the fight of mental health, SMI and stigma – but to build new innovative interventions to drive the community forward”

Our Philosophy

Ubuntu is an ancient African word meaning “humanity to others“. It is often described as reminding us that ‘I am what I am because of who we all are’.

WHAT POWERS US

Our Values

What we do has 4 L’s: Listen | Learn | Lean | Lead

LISTEN

1. We raise the visibility and amplify the voices of black men in the community in order to better understand how structural factors influence outcomes.

2. We create quality interventions and evidence-based practices through strategic partnerships in order to influence policy and practice in the future.

LISTEN

3. Directors, partners, and associates bring a variety of lived experience, knowledge, and expertise to the table, including mental health equity.

LEARN

 1. We create and deliver customized indoor, outdoor, and webinar interventions to help black men address, learn, and uncover mental health barriers and stigmas in the community, as well as inequality and inequity for additional support.

2. We convene and facilitate communities of practice to address mental health disparities at all levels and to empower every individual.

LEARN

3. Our approach teaches participants how individual racial and social identities intersect to shape mental health and well-being.

4. Participants will learn how to address structural and mental health barriers that cause and sustain inequity.

LEAD

1. To enable black men to be effective leaders (in their mental health, well-being, relationships, and finances)

2. We build on the assets that exist within their communities.
